Cursor, Claude Code, and Continue are not competing for the same job. Cursor wins for solo product builders who live inside an IDE. Claude Code wins for multi-step backend tasks and headless runs in CI. Continue wins for teams that need local or self-hosted AI. Pick by job, not by which one your timeline is loudest about this week.

Why this comparison exists

I ship real software using all three. Funnel Duo's stack runs on Next.js, Postgres, GoHighLevel APIs, a pile of TypeScript, and a smaller pile of Python for ML glue. We have AI coding agents inside the IDE, in a terminal, and in CI. Different agents handle different stages of the work, and treating them as competitors is the mistake most "best AI coding tool" listicles make.

This is a head-to-head from someone who has shipped production code with each of the three over the last twelve months, written with the assumption that you have already heard the marketing pitch and want the operator's view. Numbers in this post are current as of April 2026 and will go stale. The form-factor split is the part that lasts.

Cursor reached a reported nine-figure ARR by Q1 2026, per public investor coverage of the Anysphere round. Claude Code has been generally available since May 2025, when Anthropic launched it alongside the Sonnet 4 release, and is now the default coding interface for many Anthropic Max subscribers. Continue has been MIT-licensed since 2023 and remains the most-installed open-source AI coding extension on the VS Code marketplace.

Which is best for solo product builders?

For a solo founder or small team building a product inside an IDE, Cursor is the answer. The Composer feature ships multi-file edits in a single turn, the Tab autocomplete is genuinely faster than GitHub Copilot's, and the chat sidebar has access to your indexed codebase without you having to paste files in. The mental model matches how a solo builder already works. You write code, you ask the agent for help, you accept or reject the diff.

The pricing is honest. Twenty dollars a month for Pro covers the model usage that most solo developers will hit on a normal week. The router across Claude, GPT, and Gemini lets you switch when one model lags on a specific task. Cursor Rules let you encode project conventions in a file the agent always reads, which is the difference between an agent that knows your stack and one that keeps reaching for old patterns.

The trade-off is lock-in. You are not editing in stock VS Code, you are editing in Cursor's fork. When VS Code ships a feature, you wait for Anysphere to merge it. For solo builders shipping fast, that trade-off is worth taking. For larger teams with strict tool standards, it is not.

Which handles multi-step backend automation better?

Claude Code, by a wide margin. The terminal form factor sounds like a downgrade until you watch it run. You give Claude Code a task like "migrate this codebase from REST to tRPC" or "audit every file in this folder for unsafe SQL", and it loops on its own. It reads files, edits them, runs your test suite, reads the failure, and tries again. You watch in the terminal. You can step away.

The agent loop is the architecture that matters. Cursor's Composer is a one-shot multi-file edit. Claude Code is an iterative loop where the model decides, executes, observes, and decides again, with native tool use for file edits, bash commands, and web fetches. For long backend tasks, this is the difference between an autocomplete on steroids and an actual junior engineer who finishes the job.

Which is best for teams that need local or self-hosted AI?

Continue is the only honest answer here. The MIT license matters, the BYO-model architecture matters, and the design assumption that your model might be a local Ollama instance or a self-hosted vLLM server is what makes it work for regulated industries.

Healthcare, finance, defence contractors, anyone with a GDPR exposure, and most enterprises with a serious data-loss-prevention posture cannot send proprietary code to a cloud provider's API. Cursor and Claude Code are non-starters in those environments. Continue runs the same agent UX inside VS Code or JetBrains, but every model call goes wherever you point it. Local Llama, Mistral via vLLM, an Azure OpenAI tenant, a Bedrock endpoint, an internal proxy that audits every prompt. The IDE behaviour stays consistent, the data path changes.

The trade-off is sharpness. Open-source local models in 2026 are good, but they are not Claude Sonnet or GPT-5 good. If your only constraint is "no cloud", you accept slightly worse outputs to get full sovereignty. For teams with that constraint, that is the trade they were going to make anyway. Continue is just the cleanest way to make it.

How does the agent loop differ across the three?

The agent loop is what separates a good autocomplete from a real coding agent. The three tools sit on different points of the loop sophistication curve.

Cursor's Composer is a planned multi-file edit. You describe the change, Cursor proposes a diff across multiple files, you accept or reject. It is one shot, not an autonomous loop. For tight UI iteration, this is the right design. You do not want an agent rewriting your entire CSS file while you go for coffee.

Claude Code runs a true agent loop. The model is given tool definitions for reading files, editing files, running bash, and fetching web pages. It plans, executes, observes the output, and decides what to do next, repeated until the task is done or it gives up and reports back. This is closer to an autonomous engineer than to a smart autocomplete.

Continue's default mode is conversational chat with manual file inserts. The agent mode is in active development as of April 2026 and is closing the gap, but it is not yet at parity with Claude Code's native loop. For a team standardising on Continue, the timing question is whether to wait for full agent mode or run Claude Code in a terminal next to it.

Which runs in CI or headless?

Claude Code is the only one of the three with a serious headless story today. Anthropic ships an official GitHub Action that runs Claude Code on a pull request, with full tool access in a sandboxed runner. We use it to auto-generate release notes, audit dependency updates, and triage failing tests on a nightly schedule. The fact that the same CLI you use locally also runs in CI is what makes this practical, not theoretical.

Cursor is fundamentally an IDE. There is no cursor run equivalent that takes a prompt and a repo and returns edits. Anysphere has shown experimental work in this direction, but it is not production-ready as of April 2026. If your workflow needs nightly automated refactors, scheduled audits, or PR-triggered agent runs, Cursor is not the tool.

Continue's open-source nature means a determined team can wire it into a CI pipeline by calling its core libraries directly, but there is no first-party headless CLI. For most teams, the right answer is to use Continue for live IDE work and Claude Code for everything that runs without a human watching.

What about cost over time?

The pricing question looks simple and is actually the most operator-relevant axis. Cursor at $20 a month Pro is predictable. Continue is technically free, but you pay your model provider, so a heavy Claude Sonnet user on Continue might spend more on tokens than they would on a Cursor sub. Claude Code is included with Anthropic Pro or Max, which means if you already pay Anthropic for chat, the coding agent is bundled in.

Most solo builders in our community land on a Claude Max subscription plus Cursor Pro. The Max subscription powers Claude Code in the terminal for big tasks. Cursor Pro powers the IDE for tight feedback loops. Combined cost lands well under what a team would pay for a single seat on most enterprise dev tools, which is a reminder of how generous the indie pricing on AI coding agents still is in 2026.

The cost trap is using Continue with a pay-per-token API and not watching the meter. A long agent run can quietly burn through fifty dollars of tokens before you notice. Set a hard budget cap at the provider level if you go this route, and check the usage dashboard daily for the first month.

Can you use all three together?

Yes, and the operators getting the best results are doing exactly that. The three tools edit the same files on disk, so git is the shared source of truth. Cursor handles your IDE work in the morning while you wake up. Claude Code runs the migration overnight in a tmux session. Continue covers the teammate who refuses to leave IntelliJ, or the project where the legal team blocks cloud model calls.

The only operational rule is to commit between handoffs. If Cursor is mid-edit on a file and you fire Claude Code on the same file, you end up resolving conflicts you did not need to create. Treat the agents like remote collaborators who happen to be on your machine. Pull, work, commit, push.

Which is best for non-technical operators and vibe coders?

Cursor wins this category outright. The IDE form factor is the most familiar one for someone who has ever opened a code editor, and the chat sidebar lets a non-developer describe what they want in plain language and accept or reject a generated diff. We watch operators with no formal coding background ship landing pages, internal dashboards, and small SaaS prototypes using Cursor as their first and only environment.

Claude Code's terminal interface is a barrier, not an asset, for this audience. It expects familiarity with processes, ports, environment variables, and stack traces. Once an operator has six months of engineering muscle, the terminal becomes the better surface, but starting there is the wrong on-ramp.

Continue assumes the user already lives in VS Code or JetBrains and knows how to install extensions. That is not most non-technical operators. Send the marketer to Cursor, send the ops lead to Cursor, send the founder to Cursor. They graduate to Claude Code when the work demands it. The honest verdict is the one in the lead paragraph and the one I will repeat here. Cursor wins for solo product work inside an IDE, especially for non-technical operators and vibe coders building their first real software. Claude Code wins for multi-step backend automation, large refactors, headless CI runs, and any task you want to fire and forget. Continue wins for teams that need local or self-hosted models, and for organisations whose security or compliance posture rules out sending source code to a cloud API.

There is no overall winner because the three tools are not solving the same problem. The marketing pages will tell you they are. The actual work will tell you they are not. Pick the one whose form factor matches the job in front of you, and run two of them in parallel when the work calls for it.

Yes, and most working developers I know do exactly that. Cursor handles UI work and tight feedback loops in the IDE. Claude Code runs in a separate terminal pane for migrations, refactors, and long agentic tasks where you do not want to babysit. Continue plugs into a JetBrains IDE for a teammate who refuses to leave IntelliJ, or runs a local Ollama model on a machine that cannot send code to a cloud provider. Is Claude Code free with my Anthropic Pro or Max subscription?

Yes. Claude Code is included in Anthropic's Pro and Max plans without a separate seat fee, which is one of the biggest reasons it pulled developers off pay-per-token CLI tools through 2025 and into 2026. You install the CLI, authenticate with your Anthropic account, and you are in. Heavy users on Max get a much larger usage allowance before rate limits kick in. Does Cursor work with local models like Ollama or LM Studio?

Cursor's primary mode routes through hosted models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google. You can configure custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints in settings, so technically yes, you can point Cursor at a local Ollama instance running an OpenAI-compatible proxy. In practice, the agent features that make Cursor worth paying for, like Composer multi-file edits and the indexed codebase chat, are tuned for frontier models. Local 8B or 14B models will feel sluggish. If your top requirement is local-only, you want Continue, not Cursor. Continue was designed from day one for any provider including local.

Which AI coding agent is best for non-technical operators or vibe coders?
